Every company or organization faces a number of dilemmas. You know, the usual stuff—from meeting deadlines and targets to dealing with overly demanding clients (and bosses :P). But having been a member of various organizations both in school and in office, I would like to include this one dilemma that can pretty much be migraine-inducing as well—choosing where to hold team buildings.
“Saan tayo magti-team building?”—a simple question that creates a long pause among group members. It can join the ranks of “Bakit single pa rin ako?” and “Mahal mo pa ba siya?” in terms of difficulty. LOL. It feels like a crucial decision that can either make or break the bond of your organization. After all, in choosing where to hold your team building, you have to consider a lot of factors such as the budget (especially when the expenses are not shouldered by the company, like in our case), proximity, and availability. More often than not, the process itself can exceed the level of a formal discussion. Heated arguments can occur if worse comes to worst. O, ‘di ba? Kaya hindi mo rin masisisi ‘yung mga magsyotang nag-aaway dahil sa isang maliit na bagay. 😛
Thankfully, the whole process of planning our departmental team building went smoothly. For the benefit of both the rank-and-file and officers, we agreed to spend it at the Caliraya Resort Club at Brgy. Lewin, Lumban, Laguna.
Okay. So why did we end up in Caliraya? To be honest, we didn’t have many options to choose from. We were just torn between it and Camaya Coast in Bataan. And since the latter was quite expensive (we had to shell out 4k each!), our kuripot selves didn’t think twice. We settled for Caliraya and good thing it didn’t disappoint!
Only a two to three-hour drive from Manila, this countryside destination offers a wide array of activities that take the definition of #SquadGoals to a whole new level (yes, even without the presence of a team building moderator!). Below are the things we did to achieve such goals:
1. SLIDE PINOY a.k.a. KAPIT LANG
This activity perked up our tired-from-the-trip mood. No teamwork required; just individually slide through a cable with your ‘mates at the same time. You have to be careful, though. Hold tightly on the rope (like how you held on to save your relationship) for no helmet nor other protective gear can spare you from bruises and bumps when you accidentally fall (see, falling on the ground or for someone will really hurt you). Slide Pinoy simply served as a warm-up to prepare ourselves for the action-packed activities ahead. Lakas maka-Olympics!
2. SUPER SLIDE a.k.a. HOLDING HANDS WHILE SLIDING (HHWS)
This can be done individually or by pair; but since we were in a team building, we grabbed a partner. Magsoul-searching ka na lang kung gusto mo rin lang namang mapag-isa, ‘di ba? I called it HHWS because you will be instructed to hold your partner’s hand throughout the slide to avoid mishaps. I don’t exactly know the scientific explanation behind this, but I think it has something to do with control or friction. The technique proved to be true because when my partner and I let go of each other’s hand during our second try, we hit each other’s head upon reaching the end. Haaay, the downside of letting go!
3. SLIP ‘N SLIDE a.k.a. TRULY MUDLY DEEPLY
This is my most favorite part of our Caliraya adventure! Yes, despite it being gross and all. I’ve got to give props to our friend in front who took the courage to splash in the pool of mud first without dropping his camera to document the whole thing. LOL. I advise you to bring cotton buds, especially when you’re planning to do this, because the mud will surely get into your ears and nose. Another tip: Shout all you want during the beginning of the slide but stop when you’re already nearing the dirty destination. You wouldn’t want the sludge (which may contain some animal shit) to enter your mouth, would you? Better to be prepared than sorry…and yucky.
4. WAVE POOL a.k.a. HOW DO I GET YOU ALON?
After the mudslide which, in Filipino expression, is “masakit sa buto-buto”, we proceeded to the wave pool to relax ourselves a bit. The only struggle we encountered in this activity was removing the mud from our shirts and bodies, since no one is allowed to plunge into the pool until he/she is free from those slimy dirt. I got into the shower a couple of times before being cleared. Yup, they were that strict. LOL.
5. BONFIRE a.k.a. ALAB YOU ALL
The bonfire by the lake lit our evening. It was getting colder in Caliraya, so it was a saver for keeping us warm. We just gathered altogether, talked, and played charades and other random games.
6. SKY BICYCLE a.k.a. WE WHEEL SURVIVE
We capped off our Caliraya experience with the Sky Bicycle ride. I personally enjoyed this one. I was hesitant to try it at first, but the hell—never will I entertain my fear again! Pedaling on air was refreshing with the Lake Caliraya and a mountain range (I doubt if it’s Mt. Makiling) satisfying our eyes. This is where I got to appreciate my officemates more. Hindi nila ako iniwan sa ere. Hindi kagaya n’ya. Chos.
There are a lot of activities that we were not able to try due to time and well, money constraints. You have to stay for at least two nights to make the most of Caliraya without the need to rush. You can check out the said activities and their corresponding rates here.
Having shared this, I must say that our Caliraya outing was a success. It really lived up to the core purpose of our team building which is to form a strong camaraderie among us colleagues.
All right! Now that we already achieved our #SquadGoals, we’re back to addressing our #CompanyGoals. Huhubels.
MGA BANAT NG BIYAHE
- Hindi porket nasa Caliraya, magpaparaya. Fight for the love that’s yours!
- Iwasang ma-fall sa ka-officemate. Conflict of interest.
- Mondays are sometimes Rihanna, sometimes Miley. It’s either you work work work work work or twerk twerk twerk twerk twerk. The choice is yours.
What other team building destinations can you recommend? 🙂
